Bayka Electrifies Public Transport

Bayka electrifies public transport

When it comes to completing large, multi-year infrastructure projects efficiently, cost-effectively and on schedule, reliable suppliers are a crucial factor. The Hovedstadens Letbane (Greater Copenhagen Light Rail) system, which is being built by Siemens Mobility in consortium with Aarsleff Rail A/S in the Danish region of Hovedstaden – the capital region – by 2026, is no exception. Over a period of two years, Bayka has supported the customer with technical expertise, flexibility and adherence to deadlines.

The consortium is supplying a turnkey system for the 28-kilometre double-track line between Lyngby in the north and Ishøj in the south of Copenhagen. In addition to 29 four-car Avenio trams manufactured by Siemens Mobility, the contract includes system integration, railway electrification, signalling and communications technology, project management, depot equipment and vehicle maintenance over a period of 15 years. The light rail system is crucial to the development of the Greater Copenhagen area and the surrounding communities. It will run every five minutes during the day and can carry up to 260 passengers. Providing connections to key suburban rail lines, hospitals and universities, it is key to sustainable mobility throughout the region.
An overhead line supplies power to the light rail system, which is essentially a tram. Avenio trams can travel on tighter curves, brake faster and negotiate gradients more easily than a conventional train, making them ideal for transport in metropolitan areas. Low-floor carriages enable barrier-free boarding and alighting.

Over a period of 2 years, Bayka supplied Denmark with 29 types of high-voltage cables in various cross-sections and qualities. Aluminium conductors, copper conductors, single-wire, multi-wire and flexible round cables – almost the entire BayEnergy® range from Bayka was adapted to the customer’s specifications. After the successful completion of the project, the customer’s positive letter of thanks was the crowning glory of the entire project: “We would like to thank you and all our colleagues involved for the excellent cooperation over the past few years. In addition to the high quality delivered, which we take for granted from your company, you have achieved all the milestones set in the truly challenging environment of recent years. Both are key pillars of success in our demanding project business.”
